BEAUTIFUL EVIDENCE
.
Edward Tufte is a provocative thinker about information design and visual literacy. Anyone involved in the visual communication of information (educators, graphic artists, marketers, health professionals who educate patients) should familiarize themselves with his ideas. Beautiful Evidence, published in 2006, includes his renowned and devastating critique of PowerPoint presentations; the book deserves to be widely read for that chapter alone.

TECHNOLOGY MATTERS
.
Questions to Live With
.
"Nye's book addresses many of the issues and debates surrounding our highly textured technological society, and these are reflected in the questions he asks. Does technology control us? Does it lead to cultural uniformity or diversity? To sustainable abundance or to ecological crisis? To more security or escalating danger? The book is rich in examples, is easily readable and is short enough to be recommended for a day's read."
(from the NATURE review)

NEW TITLES ON OUR DISPLAY TABLES ----- DECEMBER 2006

SCIENCE OF FAT
.
These two DVD videos, produced by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, explain the complex biological systems that control body weight and energy metabolism. One presenter, Dr. Evans, discovered the family of nuclear receptors that control sugar and fat metabolism; he also identified the molecular trigger governing fat cell formation. The other presenter, Dr. Friedman, discovered leptin, a key regulatory hormone made by fat tissue.

AUTOMOTIVE MATHEMATICS
.
The first half of this book focuses on basic mathematical fundamentals necessary for any profession and for anyone's personal everyday needs; the second half demonstrates using those basic skills and concepts with engines, electrical and hydraulic systems, drive trains, and other practical automotive applications.

.
Crisp, easy-on-the eyes, outline style makes for fast and effective studying of the nursing concepts and content areas covered in the NCLEX-PN. Sample questions include answers and rationales.

FOUNDATIONS OF
ANALOG AND DIGITAL
ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS
.
A "blurb" on the back cover asserts that the authors may establish a new trend in the way introductory circuit analysis is taught. Computer, electronic, and engineering geeks may want to examine and evaluate this book; as for the rest of us, however, the mysteries of circuits and the thousands of schematic line drawings are, alas, only gobbledygook.

SENSORS, NANOSCIENCE,
BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING,
and INSTRUMENTS
.
While arcane mathematical formulae are scattered in only relatively modest quantities throughout this book, its audience is definitely the well-trained electrical engineer or instrument wonk. Chapter 7.3, though, on "Biological Effects and Electromagnetic Fields" is a section that could profitably be read by anyone interested in or concerned about the effects that rapidly-proliferating electronic devices could be having on human health.
.
This title is one of six volumes comprising the third edition of The Electrical Engineering Handbook.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT
FOR
DENTAL HYGIENISTS

ANTONIO GAUDI
Master Architect
.
"An authoritative survey of the Spanish architect's entire career. His fanciful, exuberant buildings and sculptures have defined Barcelona's cityscape."
.
It turns out that it's only a coincidence that the word "gaudy" so often accurately describes the nature of Antonio Gaudi's structures. Examine this charming little book, only about four inches by four inches in size, to make up your own mind about that characterization of his work.

WHAT NOT TO BUILD
Architectural Options
for Homeowners
.
Do's and Don'ts
of Exterior Home Design

.
What a fascinating and attractive book to browse through! Highly useful for architects, without doubt, but current or potential homeowners will find it invaluable for evaluating current or future domiciles. Large, bright, full-color images illustrate, with precision, a myriad of structural rules and principles of mass, balance, scale , proportion, and rhythm, including such obscure prescriptions as the "75-percent test" which states glass must occupy at least 75% of the surface area of a dormer for that roof structure to appear in scale with the rest of the dwelling.

.
Keywords, pitfalls, and review questions.

In a Twenty-First Century publishing innovation, forty-four appendices are not included in the book but are available free on the publisher's Website.
.
The 62 chapters range from topics such as Basic Physics, Instrumentation, and Knobology to others like Possible Adrenal Mass, Hematuria, and Carotid Artery Disease.

DEBUNKING 9/11 MYTHS
Why Conspiracy Theories
Can't Stand Up to Facts

An in-depth investigation based on a much shorter article originally published in the March 2005 Popular Mechanics magazine. COMPLETE PORTFOLIO OF
HUMAN ANATOMY AND PATHOLOGY

Collection of 50 Anatomical Charts ...

Western Library owns many well-illustrated anatomy books but perhaps none can match the vividness and clarity of the expository drawings in this Scientific Publishing collection. Plates of the skeletal system, the hand and wrist, and the eye are to be expected, of course, but what makes the work unique is the visual explanations of diseases and conditions such as asthma, hypertension, hepatitis, diabetes and many other afflictions.
